[s-cars] irregular temp guage readings

I was just following the thread. My usual diagnostic on this is if the
gauge reads low and channel 51 on the HVAC readout reads low (when the
heater is on), your thermostat is stuck open. However, if the HVAC read
out is fine but the temp gauge reads low, your MFTS is borked and you
need to replace it. It is under the intake manifold and has the rubber
boot as Tom suggested. The socket needs to be a deep 29 mm socket to
clear the sensor connections on the MFTS. I inadvertently changed mine
one day (29 mm socket and stubby rachet) in my "good" clothes while
waiting for my wife to get ready to go out for Sunday brunch.
I was just "practising" how I would make the change in the afternoon
when I just decided to do it (engine was cold). Having the new MFTS
handy and using one finger to plug the water manifold hole while the
switches are juggled was the only trick. Lost about a cup of coolant.
Took 5 minutes. Of course, I did have to go wash my hands and when I
got done, guess who was now waiting for me? (My wife - of course it was
my fault now we were late). ;>)
