[s-cars] PSO needed

Hi Dave:

Welcome to the s-car list! I recall your name from the 20v.org list
(Rennlist), I still have my '90 90q20v along with a 1997 S6 and subscribe in
digest mode.

Anyway, to answer your question, yes, the PSO or POS does fail due to
excessive heat. Also, the coilpacks under the cover will fail eventually too.

You have several options here:

1. buy a new or used PSO, either from a V6 (AAH or AFC) or I5 AAN
2. replace the 2 PSOs along with all 5 coilpacks with 5 coilpacks from the
1.8T which incorporates the PSO, coil and sparkplug boot.
3. buy a "upgrade system" from 034 Motorsports which uses remote coilpacks /
PSOs.

If you are a DIYer and not afraid to do some legwork, the 2nd option can be
done quite cheaply, for less than $300 or you can buy a plug-n-play one with
wiring harness from 034 or Apikol for $500-$600.

The former was pioneered by Dave Forgie, and there is a list of all the parts
required available on AudiWorld, or also the archives here.

One note, heat is the enemy here and many choose to run without the coil cover.

Cheers,

Sean Douglas
