Thompson,
Check out this link that Paul Heneghan posted a couple of days ago.
http://www.eveshamsquash.co.uk/audi/climate.html
In it there is another link (below the first picture) to a pdf that
describes how to repair the flapper motors.
With regard to the compressor motor, mine also makes quite a racket
though in my case it is more like the mouse that roared. I don't know
whether it is possibly the clutch bearing or if it's the internals. It
really puts a drag on the engine and sounds very disconcerting. To the
point that I avoid using the AC unless absolutely necessary, and then
I'm careful not to rev it past 4500 as the roar gets really loud. I'm
hoping that's the clutch bearings and not the compressor but haven't
really had the opportunity to get it looked at. I just don't use it. I
don't have the knocking sound that some folks have had. I've heard that
first hand and it sounds almost like rod knock but it's the compressor.
The lights for the CC are fairly easy to replace. There are two 1/4
turn bulbs in the back of the controller similar to the ones from the
IC.
