Thanks Encyclopedia Rossatica!  You are correct.  Hoog referred me to
some research he did.  I was unaware that the 1.8t in the Pussat was in
fact a longitudinal one.  1.8t, manual, torsen, wouldn't be such a bad
thing.  Think I'd still take a loaded W8 4M Wagon mit 18" wheels, oe
sport suspension, HID's and sport interior tho!  Oh yeah, and Torsen!

I've lost track of which generation is which on the Passat at this
point, but from '98 to '04 (may have even been an '05 model imported as
well) the Passat was built on a combination Audi A4/6 chassis (Basically
a stretched A4 chassis with A6 rear suspension).  So it's a longitudinal
arrangement for the engine and the 4motion uses the same 01E torsen
transmission as the traditional Audi quattro setup.  The new '06 Passat
has split from the A4 line and is once again a transverse engine layout
which would use Haldex for AWD setups.  Every few generations the B
series VW (Passat) and B series Audi (A4) converge and diverge, so I'm
sure the Passat will probably go longitudinal once more in 6-7 years.
