Agreed-completely different types of lubricant used between the two.
The seals in the system are made for each specific formula of lubricant.
That being said, I know people who have done what you suggested and it
worked fine. These people, however, were ready to tear out their AC
systems if this didn't work. If you're not ready to A. give up on using
your ac if it doesn't work or B. do major r & r work on the system, then
don't attempt it.
OTTH, if you look on ebay, you can find R12 canisters for sale. I just
did: http://search.ebay.com/r12-refrigerant_W0QQfkrZ1QQfnuZ1QQxpufuZx

Subject: [s-cars] r134 in r12 system?
Hi all
I have a friend that is a mechanic(not a licensed a/c tech) and claims
he put R134 in an old V8 of his years ago and it suffered no ill
fate....My system is low and he wants to do the same for me....(free of
charge) as a favor owed. Will it harm the system at all ?
Thanks
Tim
