R12 uses mineral oil... R134 uses PAG oil. Mineral oil is not miscible in R134, and PAG oil is not miscible in R12. If you do a full recharge of an R12 system with 134 without flushing the system and charging it with PAG oil, your compressor will fail in short order. I can not speak for "topping off" an R12 system that is low using R134. To me, that sounds like simply a bad idea.

With regards to purchasing R12... it isn't quite as easy as shopping on ebay... as those folks are required to have your certification on file before selling you product. If you aren't certified, you can't buy it.

You can, however, get certified. I did, and it has proven worthwhile.

Agreed-completely different types of lubricant used between the two.
The seals in the system are made for each specific formula of lubricant.
That being said, I know people who have done what you suggested and it
worked fine. These people, however, were ready to tear out their AC
systems if this didn't work. If you're not ready to A. give up on using
your ac if it doesn't work or B. do major r & r work on the system, then
don't attempt it.

OTTH, if you look on ebay, you can find R12 canisters for sale. I just
did: http://search.ebay.com/r12-refrigerant_W0QQfkrZ1QQfnuZ1QQxpufuZx
