Tim,
I second Bob's words. I would _strongly_ recommend not to do this on 
your own unless you are _very_ comfortable with a soldering iron and 
with the de-soldering wick.

Also do NOT use ZIF sockets since they are not designed to work in the 
shaky car environment. The top chip will gradually work itself loose in 
the socket. Eventually the engine will develop intermittent stumbles 
which will take a while to trace. Ask me how I know this.
