Darin,
Did the failure result (or could it result) in the timing mark falling out
of sync with the crank? In other words, if you hadn't noticed the problem
and replaced the balancer, could you have accidentally put the belt on
incorrectly? Maybe that's what happened to Dave's car?

I just fixed this on my father's car about a month ago. The rubber
bonding on the balancer got a bit old and dry and let loose. The result
was that the front 'ring' on the balancer could be turned and wiggled by
hand. The problem first manifested itself as a metallic sounding
'ker-ching' when pulling away from a stop or revving the engine. The
balancer was dealer only and it came through the Audi dealer in Rochester,
MN. The uber expensive washer was not needed. I inspected the original
vs the new one and there was NO difference in the two. In our case the
washer was $50 or so and was sent back for a refund. The balancer and
key/crank pulley appear to be attached but they come apart with a little
work. ;-)
I did replace the lower crank seal and slipped on a new timing belt while
I was in there....
