Having BTDT on my father's S4 I don't see how the harmonic balancer could
fail in a way that would screw up timing.  The balancer is pretty much
just a weight with a rubber bonding to a pulley.  Failure of the balancer
would likely be a result of the rubber bonding letting go which is what
happened on my father's car.  The worst thing it was doing was making a
chatter noise and making the engine feel as if it were running rougher
than normal at throttle tip-in.  When I replaced it, I was somewhat
shocked to see that I could rotate the weighted portion of the balancer
180 degrees on the center hub... I will look to see if I snapped a picture
of it and post it if possible.
