Wider contact patch, or stiffer sidewalls?

I'm trying to decide on tires for this summer.  I have a nice set of
refinished 16x8 stock wheels waiting for new rubber.  There is a broad
selection of max performance tires available in 225/50, but relatively 
few in 245/45.  Any advice on the merits of a wider tire vs. the 
tradeoffs will be appreciated.  This is for a few DE events and normal
street driving.

For example: Yokohama AVS Sport in 245 vs. Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 in
225.  The cost is about the same.  Which would you choose?
