One problem with a laser based, laser "jammer" (besides the legal
"obstruction" issue if caught, fortunately not the FCC) is the finess of the
beam. If your "quarry" is even "just outside" of your countermeasure, your
countermeasure will fail completely. Way back when laser was first
implemented, Car and Driver did a test of resistance and found that 100W
high beams (NOT HID, to color temp hot, won't work at all!) and one of those
laser absorbing plate covers (they use thin film interference, like a camera
lens) seemed to limit the effective range of the laser guns to much less
than visual straight line distance, IOW, gave you a fighting chance to slow
down. They considered, but did not test mounting something like Hella
Ralleye 2000's on the car's bumper with IR filters from Edmund Scientific in
them. They only problem would be the large reflector area would make you a
much better radar target. Of course none would work, as our own Mr. Speedy
Krasusky has found out, if everytime the HP sees you, your car's nose is
buried into the pavement and smoke is pouring off the rear tires
intermittently with every ABS pulse.
