Mark, I had the same problem that you had with the OEM HID's awhile back.
Sean helped me with some info too.
My $ 800 shipped from Europe HID's seemed like a good deal at the time until
the driver's side would not fire all the time. Like you I got by with
turning on the foglight and I never got stopped. After looking around trying
to find a replacement with no luck I broke down and bought the replacement
part. I got the replacement assembly ( bulb, ignitor, cover) from Alex at
Europrice for $ 600+. So now at $1400, I wished that I would have gone with
a NEW eurolights (I had one US and one Canadian light) and then converted to
HID.
I came really close to prying with a screwdriver to try to release the bulb
socket. I eventually found the small tab and depressed it to release.
