I was trying to be general as there awre variations on the theme - AAN just
using a different method to control boost. In the AAN case, the spring will
assist just as well, if not better.

i think you're talking about the MC engines. the AAN engines apply
boost to the bottom of the wastegate and use the boost to open the
wastegate. the WGFV is used to remove boost from the bottom of the
wastegate and keep the wastegate shut.
