Thanks to all who replied.  With Igor's help, I replaced the fuel pump today.  I don't know how this would work in a sedan, but the avant is really great for access.  We followed Dave Forgie's instructions, except that we only drained the tank to where the top of the fuel pump cradle was accessible without putting your hands directly in liquid.  Getting the pump out was much easier than anticipated.  Dave's write-up is excellent.  The only thing I would add is to make sure you have two new crush washers for the banjo bolt (unless that's already in the write up).  I was able to get the pump and a new fuel filter from the dealer for $168 including tax - not too bad.
