i'd guess that's because of the high level of additives used in the
rotella T synthetic, which is intended to be used in diesel engines.
the VW specs (especially the recent ones) limit the amount of 
antiwear additives allowed in the oil, for environmental reasons,
and also require the oil to be stable at extended drain intervals (15k
miles now).  that's why mobil 1 changed its formula, but the old formula
with the greater levels of EP additives is available as mobil 1 EP.

people have run oil analyses after using rotella T in their audis 
and gotten excellent results, even after running the oil for 10-15k
miles.
