No, there will be no text information.
CD Changer will be eliminated completetly. iPod will be in a glovebox connected directly to the back of HU. I already bought all connectors (they had to be bought from europe)
It will be operated exactly as CD Changer. Only track numbers and discs(playslists). To be honest, I didn't start to look into commands that HU send and CD Changer responses.
It may be possible on this specific HU to support more then 10 playslists since there is no hard buttons for disc numbers. It's "up" and "down" instead.
And I'm not sure if I will go with playlists. Maybe I will use "Albums". There is another button for scanning - I may use that one for "shuffle"
As long as protocol known - microcontroller can be programmed any way..
This is my ultimate goal as we switch cars with my wife pretty often and BMW have good aftermarket iPod integration. After I complete this one - it will be easy for us to switch cars :)

Ivan,
I am interested in what the benefits are of creating a microcontroller to interface between the headunit and the ipod are. Will you be able to show song titles and such on the hu?
I created my own ipod interface this summer with a relay switch setup so I could easily switch between the ipod and cd changer. I used a switch out of a friend's 100 parts car and replaced one of the blank ones on the center console so it looks completely stock :-) I could provide details for this project if anyone is interested, it is fairly simple and very effective. I am currently in an undergraduate program for electrical engineering so I hope to be able to upgrade my system to what you are talking about soon.
