paul, i had the same problem with the IR system in my '92, and neither
of the remotes worked. after trying to get the system to work, i decided
to install an RF system instead.

don't be afraid. it's pretty easy to do, and entirely reversible. first
time around, i used scotchloks (tap splices that pierce the insulation)
to make the connections, because i wanted to be able to take everything out
if it didn't work. after a while, when the system started getting flaky,
i removed the scotchloks, stripped insulation from the wires, and soldered
the connections. the RF remote beats the IR remote hands-down. i have
separate buttons for lock and unlock, and if i were motivated enough, i
would wire the sunroof/window control module to the RF system so that i
could close all the windows and sunroof with the remote.
