Paul, maybe I am misunderstanding you here, but what I meant was that I
don't see the advantage of the CLOSE ratio 6 speed, i.e. the one where the
6th gear is the same ratio as the stock 5th gear, for anything other than
road racing. The 0.64 or 0.68 6th gear I can definitely see the advantage
for commuting.
You said you got yours from a '93 S4 V-8???
I must admit, I am not at all up on all the European models but I was not
aware of a '93 S4 with a V-8. So do trannies like this bolt right in, or
are they major surgery to get into the car?

I recently installed an EDU 6-speed (.68 6th gear). RPM/Speed data in
6th
is:
2400rpm 60 mph
3000rpm 75 mph
Not as low as you are hoping for, but I have seen a slight improvement
in my
gas mileage if I go easy on the go-fast pedal

This might be much easier than you think. I believe some of the euro
diesel transmissions like the DPJ might fit the bill. SJM lists it's
ratios as (3.5, 1.89, 1.32, 1.03, 0.67, 0.56) (1st-4th matching the
rs2). The DPJ also has the wide/flexible first and 4.11 to 1 FD, of
course.

Steve-
Bolt on some big dumb turbo and make go like stink power or spend less
and install a 6spd and <<<MAKE THE CAR>>>. But whaddaIknow.
My CMG out of a '93 //S4 4.2 was also a 0.68 6th. Mike you got *better*
mileage? Oh by going easier on the dumbdumb pedal. Ooops. How you
manage that with that gearbox?
Me I found the extra "found" 500+/- RPM gain to merely through the car
back into the beginning of the powerband thereby creating a paradigm
shift of what speeds you now "cruise" at. Ya know 100-120 bursts sure
do feel awwwwwwfullllllllllly good in 6th they do. Me my mileage
plummeted. I was warned this prior to install - I figured save rev's
save gas and was told sure if you don't row the shifter out of the box -
which you will. And he was right.
Hitting the hammer in 6th with the K24 / MRC set up was like lighting a
friggin match under the hood - funny you have that similar set up Mike -
get that MPG down now would ya??? Very er um 'habit-forming' set up.
Couple this with the Pederson/Hap lead fillied shifter and maybe one of
them current market SSK's, maybe some redline oil, and oh momma is it a
snicksnicksnickety set up. Makes the car. And don't forget some
clutching and banishment of that infernally rubbery dual crap flywheel.
Road racing says Calvin / I say commuting.
Er, was that out loud?
Rossato would know all this if he actually installed a part.
To answer your Q, do I believe you could go down to an even lower 6th?
Sure, but I wouldn't go much further. Don't want to create big a gap.
One thing I did note in my car is the new "cruising RPM" does change the
resonant frequency of what my Stebro megaphoned at. Not bad, just
different. Current owner reported installing Stromunch this week huh
Posto? Heh heh. Be interesting to hear it...
-Paul never, ever listen to me K.
