Dave:

If you have heat from time to time, have you checked that your coolant
thermostat is OK?  Does the temperature gauge read right up to the line
where it should be (or close to it)?  Does it read low when you don't have
heat?  Audis are notorious for going through thermostats, the T-stats seem
to get sluggish especially when it starts to get cold.  If you don't find
any fault codes on the 3 flapper motors, that would be a good place to look.
It's an easy replacement, may not be a bad idea to put a new one in anyway
if the heat is lousy.
