Peter,
You will need to pull whole assembly to replace blower motor. I do not recall anybody lubricating them. You just replace it. VERY good idea is to replace heater core while you there as they fail a lot and do not cost much. On mine, I replaced motor while doing heater core ;-)
Everything done from under the hood, you only need to disconnect/reconnect some ducts and wire connectors under dash.
You DON'T NEED to pull dash or disassemble interior. Just black plastic dusts need to be removed.

the new to us S6's blower squeals at certain fan speeds, want to
address this before it gets much colder.
On my type 44 200s, I could have pulled the rubber boot over one of
the motor brushes and sprayed some WD40 or lubricant onto the
bearings to quiet if for a time... I eventually replaced the fan on
one car without removing the heater box, and replaced it on the other
when I R&Red the heater core.
Unfortunately the S6 heater box is close, but different.
Can I replace the blower without pulling the entire airbox?
thanks!
-Peter
