This is a good point. Remember the whole thread started with failing
emissions (i.e., low rpm issues during test conditions). Yes, the MRC RS2
software seems to run a bit richer overall (I would rather be slightly rich,
give back a few HP, but know I won't detonate an engine). I am using the
low cost Racetronix Delphi-Lucas injectors with stock MAF and FPR and MRC
software, do occasionally feel the engine to load up, and sometimes have an
idle stutter, but overall, with a strong mid-range and go to the red-line
performance I am pleased. If I flunked emissions, I too might look for
alternatives. I spoke to Bob Pastore about this issue last week and he is
of the same mind and felt the Lucas-Delphi injectors are acceptable and get
the job done.
We, as a group who have done these tweaks, are making a lot more HP than
even the "stock" RS2 and are generally pleased. I am of the opinion that
highly tuned engines, even with relatively sophisticated ECU and SW, will
always leave something on the table. Yes, throw plenty of $$$ (stand-alone
engine management, re-engineer the whole shebang, ala Hap, et.al.) at the
issue of making more HP and I am certain you can get exceptional performance
and (perhaps) emissions across the whole RPM range, but we seem to be a
grass roots bunch of guys who more typically than not take the low $
approach. Live with it!
My $.02

While it easy to blame the injectors, perhaps we should look at the
programming and see if these injectors where ever designed to run at such
low duty cycles and / or pressure range that our Audis need to run at idle.
Not trying to say that the bosch are any better or worse, but perhaps these
Lucas units are running out of their designed operating range.
