Taka:

I just ran out the garage, and based on the weight and my magnet, yes they
are steel.

Sean-
Thanks for the correction. Is it a _steel_ hat that comes with 993tt rotors?

Then we are still making things complicated by using an aluminum hat,
although nearly all of the aftermarket guys use aluminum hats- Racing Brake,
DBA, KVR, etc.

I'm considering getting Racing Brake 2-piece rotors for the STi- aluminum
hats, iron rotors, loses a good 4 lbs. over the stock rotors, costs about
the same as OEM rotors ($700).

Don't know about the others, but the hat on the 993tt *is* intended to be
replaced. When you order new rotors for a 993tt, it comes with a steel hat
mounted to the ring.

But I agree with you that with what we are doing (taking a 993tt ring,
removing the 993tt hat and mounting a custom aluminum hat on it) the hat
will not be a disposable part and used over again.
