Tom,
both the S4 and the S6 speedometers take digital input from the 
transmission. The only difference is the S4 odometer is mechanical 
(rolling drums) whereas the one in the S6 is digital LCD.

Either cluster works in either car, plug and play. No need to swap 
speedometers. In my case I had an Audi dealership to perform a 
documented instrument cluster swap during the federalisation process. My 
Metric '97 S6 rides with an Imperial '94 S4 cluster in it.
