Paul-
I'm not doubting you, but my guess would be that he is not downshifting
aggressively enough
to take advantage of his power surplus over your car. With 7-speed SMG, he
would probably
have to drop three or four gears- the V-10 peaks at 7750 rpm.

Also, I think torque-wise, there isn't a huge disparity- the M5 is 383lb-ft.
at 6100 rpm. Your car
has got something like 320-330lb-ft. at a lower rpm. That helps.

So a combination of not selecting the right gear (which is so easy with SMG
that he's gotta be retarded),
peaky engine and probably not putting the car into full-power mode makes for
a rather lame representation
of the M5.

The E500 has even better responses- the automatic allows for easy
downshifting and a great drop on
someone unless the other person has an enormous power advantage.

I know the M5 doesn't have aero problems (like the big-winged Japanese rally
cars), so that's all I
can think of. Now if you had RS2ed your car, he'd end up totally embarrassed
(400hp E60 M5 would actually
be at a power disadvantage compared to a 370hp RS2ed C4 S6).

Kind of like how I was able to keep up with a CLK 430 without any problems
in the 200q. That guy was pissed.....
