Dan,

It makes you wonder about the advice you are getting when it is
contradicted by knowledgeable folks.

I agree with Shokan that this is no place to start.  Bentley seems to
agree that looking at some connections and relays is called for first
in the troubleshooting matrix--ground and pump relay for the hydraulic
sensing unit.

It sounds like the joint replacement guy is off the hook as far as  
displacing
a sensor goes.  They usually don't tear up anything else doing that job.
The mechanic may be referring specifically to your sensors not being
removable.  Depending on where you are, corrosion of 10 year old
parts can make them not reusable.   Otherwise, they can be removed
and replaced.

All this  assumes the brake system itself is operating properly, with  
all
fluid levels correct.   I have inferred from your mail that you have  
continued
to operate the car, so I have assumed you are confident that the ABS and
BRAKE lights are both caused by a problem in the ABS and not the brake
system.
