97 and 98 A 8 for sure; much improved 00 and 01 A8;so far the have yet to hear of any S 8's. I wouldn't assume that the S has the same tranny as the A 8. 02 and 03 are mostly lower miles, so the experience factor isn't there yet for us.

  Well OK, but now that makes me feel stupid for letting that beauty go for $19K yesterday :)

  But what about the transmissions? Last time I really looked at these cars (couple years ago, and it was an A8 actually) it seemed like people were having problems?

    Gotta disagree vigorously on this point. These cars are no more costly to
    own than anything else. It's the best car Audi ever built up to that point.
    still
    quite simple/staightforward compared to the latest generation cars. services
    are at 40 and 80 k for for plugs and filters 105k I think for the T belt;
    brakes are no more expensive than the rest of the Audi's (which is cheaper
    than my Chevy S 10) and when is the last time someone had an exhaust part
    rust out??? My S 10 is on it's third exhaust repair at 95 K miles
    plenty of glorified oil changes in between. Our experience has been that
    these cars don't break big very often at all. Couple that with 24+mpg (S8)
    on the hiway with the biggest grin on the planet and they are without a
    doubt the car to own. they won't own you with decent care.
    take that .02 to the bank.
