Iain,
1. As a general rule you'll want the winter set to have exactly the
opposite parameters. Go for as narrow the tread, and as high the
sidewall as you can get away with taking into consideration your caliper
size. If memory serves me right I had the 195/65/15 on one of my
quattros and those had the best damn winter traction of all the Audis
I've owned.
2. That, or a set of cheap stamped steel wheels will serve the purpose
just as well.
