Hi all,
These are both good ideas, as are some of the others I've received. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions!
I've got my possibilities narrowed down to these, in the order I like them so far...YMMV:
1. In front of the ashtray/cubby
Advantage - Easy to see and access, probably the best aesthetics in my opinion.
Disadvantage - Blocks the cubby and ashtray.
2. In place of the phone
Advantage - Invisible and thus not tempting to thieves
Disadvantage - Have to open armrest to change/view controls, doesn't fit very well.
3. Left of steering column, below trim
Advantage - Easy to see and access (for driver)
Disadvantages - Have to custom bracket, not a great place to have the AUX port for my iPod
4. In front of one of the console vents
Advantage - Easy to see and access
Disadvantages - Blocks precious A/C during sweltering Michigan summers, have to make custom bracket
In the end, I might choose the phone location since I hear that the display is too bright at night for some people and thus I might not want the display in front of me. That remains to be seen, since I haven't used the unit at night yet.
Thanks again for all your suggestions, guys! Your sage advice is much appreciated.

I made a simple bracket at the cottage for my XM radio.
I removed the instrument cluster and screwed my home made bracket in there.
No one will ever see them holes.
It mounts the unit in front of the left most A/C duct in the center console.
Worked pretty good, hard to even see the bracket once it's on it.
