A fuel pump will just die.  Running fine. Shut off car. Go into 7 Eleven
for milk.  Come back out.  Crank til the cows come how (which would have
eliminated the trip for milk) but its over. Dead. Gone to meet its
maker.
 
I have heard people advocate pre-emptively replacing the fuel pump
after about 100 K miles to prevent such a situation.
 
Oh, wait.
 
That was me.
 
Ask me WHY I say this.
