Funny I was just rereading David E Davis' book while travelling to pick up
an S car (P type tho) yesterday. In 1987 he drove the 9000turbo hard in
europe and has this quote:
"... I'd never driven an automatic Saab before, and it strengthened my
belief that really fast, really contemporary cars no longer require manueal
gear-boxes. Today that choice has become strictly a matter of personal taste"

I believe he has a similar quote on the 928S4 as well.

The DSG probably has the best potential, though I'm suspect as to it's
longevity. In the R32 it works darn well, but again, my taste tends towards big
pigs having autoboxes. As I found out with the supercharger in my DOHC 4.5L
Landcruiser, you add gobs of torque, autoboxes become the preferred, IMO.

I guess I'm with Taka on this.

I've driven a lot of cars - big, small, auto, manual, and I just don't
like manual anything.

Lawnmowers, grain trucks with no synchros - I like manuals.

It could be that the S8 would be so great that I'd drool all over
myself and never notice. But I doubt it. I've driven Tip-trannied
Porsche, and hated it. The 996 is great, but the tranny ruined it for
me. I had more fun driving my crappy Scirocco.

There's something about being able to control the transmission of a
car *at all points*, with no wonders at any time if the car's brain is
gonna select the gear that's in *my* brain.

It's part of the fun of driving a good car, IMO. To be crude, I'd
liken driving the S8 to having sex using a condom. Yeah, it's good,
but it could be *better*.

Sorry to everyone else for having to take it down to a level where
Paulie K. would understand it. [runs and hides]
