Keith,
Yes and no, at first the noise would only happen on startup in the morning. As it got worse it would happen more at idle and when driving would go away. Sounds like you may have the same problem. You should be able to stand at the front of the car with the hood open and be able to tell at least if its coming from the front of the car. The ac compressor can also make similar noise.

Subject: engine trouble HELP
Elijah,
I have been having a similar noise in my '95.5 S6 over past two weeks, as well!
My noise is intermittent, in that I only hear the squealing noise when I have my
foot off the gas pedal. As soon as I BARELY touch the gas, the noise is gone.
At first I was worried this was a transmission noise, but that may not be the
case. Did you notice that you had the same relationship with the gas pedal and
the noise?
Thanks,
Keith Bedard

Ok, I took the serpentine belt off and it looks like the wheel/pully that the
fan hooks to is the culprit. If I remember right this is attached to a bracket
that has to be replaced at the same time. Where can I buy these parts fast?
Thanks,
Elijah

Well, I think you'll have to pull the main serpentine belt off and see what's
locked up. I would guess the AC compressor is locked up, but you'll know for
sure when you pull the belt off.
