Vacuum leak? From your description, it seems like it only occurs when
the engine is pulling a strong vacuum (throttle shut, rpms above idle).

Elijah,
It sounds like my noise may have a different origin than yours. My car
sounds perfect at idle, and the noise is only there when car is in gear,
and I have let off the gas pedal. The noise is gone if I press the
clutch, and it is gone when coasting in neutral.
At first, I though it may be a clutch or transmission component
(throw-out bearing, pressure plate, pilot bearing), but I don't have an
extensive knowledge of those parts, and a friend of mine heard the noise
and does not think it is those.
Any BTDTs or good guesses are greatly appreciated!
-Keith

driving would go away. Sounds like you may have the same problem. You
should be able to stand at the front of the car with the hood open and
be able to tell at least if its coming from the front of the car. The ac
compressor can also make similar noise. Elijah
