If your goal is simply better sound -- rather than getting a CD player
in the dash -- you can upgrade everything except the original head
unit. There is a lot of misinformation out there on this subject, but
the truth of the matter is that the Audi "Bose" head unit works fine
with aftermarket amps and speakers. Aside from the Bose logo on the
front, there is nothing Bose about it. (I believe it's made by
Blaupunkt.) The confusion arises because of a legitimate
incompatiblity between the Bose speakers and non-Bose amplifiers. But
if you replace both the speakers and the amps there is no issue.
In my 94 S4 I have the original radio driving two amps in the trunk.
The front and rear speakers have been replaced and a subwoofer added.
Sounds really good for what I have in it.
If you change the head unit you will most certainly lose the dash display.
