A bad damper does manifest itself as "wandering" but that does not fit
with your comment about not returning to centre.  I had a wandering
problem in the summer and was thinking all sorts of problems.  Since I
had a proper new damper that I never installed (2yrs), I finally did the
job (no biggy once you figure out the tab that holds the single center
bolt). Miracle.  No more wandering.

I suggest you go for the "Fox" version of the damper.  It works as well
(I am told) and the cost is much much less.
