I agree with this. I can also see a metal one being a big resonator
or a place to trap objects that would set up annoying rattles (small
stones on sheet metal).
But the trap door for oil/filter change? I like it!
I'd do that for my 100S Avant (has the same pan), just for the convenience.
But I wouldn't do it to the S-car. I found my leaking J-hose by
inspecting a previously-clean pan, which all of a sudden sported an
oily spot, and the oil didn't feel or smell like motor oil.
Also, on the 100S, it alerted me to a failing water pump. A small
stain of crystallized antifreeze solution leftovers alerted me to the
leaky shaft.
They are a pain to replace, but I'm keeping them on all my Audis.
