[s-cars] Rule number 3, don't be a schmuck.

Darin,
I haven't really said anything about this issue, but in reading the
"guidelines" I have a question.
#3 paraphrased states "Do not join the list to sell your stuff; if you do
you will get banned." It leaves a little vagueness when it comes to
established members.
So in reading #3 I get this interpretation....
If you happen to be a list regular, or member in good standing, a posting
that says "Hey, all my list brethren, I have some stuff I put on the
marketplace you might want. This is what I am trying to get rid of, just an
FYI". I understand that the list is not a place to post for sale classified
ads, but a respectful heads up seems within the letter of the law. Can you
clarify?
Thanks,
James

Since you asked, I am the day-to-day list admin for you guys.
If there is any question on the matter, see the top of the first page
regarding this list.
http://www.audifans.com/mailman/listinfo/s-car-list
"Also, please refrain from posting classified ads or other promotional
materials on the list. Classifieds should be posted within the
marketplace or S-CAR Classifieds at s-cars.org"
And now for your reading enjoyment I present a review of the list
guidelines which have been in place since.... well, since the first
Pizzo joke was ever posted. (A long time folks!)
Private User List Guidelines:
We welcome all Audi owners and enthusiast to join in the discussion on
the mailing lists but we do ask for your cooperation with the
following guidelines.
1. Be kind to others. Mutual respect for other Audi enthusiasts goes
a long way to keep the peace on the list. When debates get started on
the list don't resort to personal attacks or adolescent name calling.
Doing so may result in suspension of posting abilities. As an old
song lyric says, "Act your age, not your shoe size." We try to let
the list be self moderating without moderator intervention, but if you
can't control yourself we might step in and do it for you... you don't
want that.
2. Watch your language. The lists are deemed 'family friendly' and we
strive to keep it that way. Your post might be flagged for rejection
if it contains excessive profanity.
3. No spam... please! Please do not join our lists in order to sell
your car or other S-Car parts or for other promotional purposes.
We're not a classified/press release mailing list. If you join a list
and immediately send out a classified ad post for your car or other
promo you'll be banned).
Both the Audifans.com and S-Cars.org sites operate dedicated
classified areas for this very purpose and they are both free of
charge.
4. You are solely responsible for your words. In other words, if you
say something that lands you in legal trouble with a vendor, you are
on your own. We don't moderate the mailing list traffic 24-7, so if
you say something stupid we can't always throw you a life preserver.
The old line, think before you speak (or type) works well here.
5. Do not send attachments to the list. (They will be rejected.) If
you must share image files with other list members and have no place
to put it, we suggest that you upload it to the S-CAR list photo
upload area at S-CARS.ORG:
http://www.s-cars.org/postnuke/modules.php?set_albumName=s-lists&op=modload&
name=gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php
Then simply point other users to that location. You'll need an S-CARS
user ID in order to upload files.
6. Try not to beat an already dead horse. In other words, if a
certain 'thread' has been going on and on for quite some time without
any real progress perhaps it is time to move on. If you still wish to
debate the topic, do so in private e-mail correspondence rather than
on the list.
We hope you enjoy the interaction with other Audi S car enthusiasts
from around the globe. If you enjoy this resource, please use the
PayPal donation button on the Audifans.com web site to help contribute
to the cost of hosting and maintaining these mailing lists.
Enjoy!
There you have it. Sorry I wasn't able to chime in sooner but I'm
just catching up after roughly a week in an alternate universe (or
something like that). Yeah, I had sort of let a lot of the
classified ads slip under my radar simply due to the fact that if I
were to email every person that posted one it would invariably turn
into a big back and forth debate on the matter. Some people don't
like rules so they follow their own, some people download copyrighted
MP3s and think that is legal too.
I try to intervene as little as possible on this list because I think
for the most part you guys do a nice job of self policing. Do I mind
the ad posts? Not so much to be honest. I do however try to honor
the wishes of our list host Dan (and Brett) who does not want ads
posted on their list. Now, if you happen to be taking part in a topic
on the list and in a P.S. you were to briefly mention "P.S. - I have
an AAN engine for sale in the marketplace/s-car classifieds" along
with a URL to the ad I wouldn't freak out about it. Perhaps we could
make ads legal one day a week (such as Friday since we're usually all
nuts by then anyhow). As for now though, the official stance is that
outright ad postings are not encouraged.
PLEASE try to use one or both of the following instead...
Audifans marketplace: http://www.audifans.com/marketplace/browse.php
or
S-CAR Classifieds:
http://www.s-cars.org/postnuke/modules.php?op=modload&name=zClassifieds&file

Thanks guys,
Darin
