Darin has a buyers guide on <www.s-cars.org>. A lot of that may be
very basic
to you since you seem to have some Audi knowledge. :-)
There have been a surprising number of these engines left untouched
to 90K
miles. It's only neglect if the timing belt fails :-), since
otherwise there is nothing
gained unlike oil changes and other preventive maintenance. But, I
do agree
that, with a PO saving money there, the rest of the car deserves a
close look.
With a moderate amount of abuse, the cars will sail to the 105K mark
with no
major work but it can start to show here. The suspension and
steering can
start to need work, and certainly look for any oil or fluid leaks. I
say pass
on any evidence of hydraulic (steering and brake system) fluid or
coolant
leaks or a rusty coolant overflow tank or dirty hydraulic fluid
reservoir.
The interior needs to be pristine, not just "nice for its age".
There are very
few new OEM upholstery items available.
Most of these cars are selling in the $8K to $10K range unless they
are really
exceptional cars. There are some nice lister cars for sale in this
range, and some
exceptional ones as well.
