Yes you can get them cheap... and you get what you pay for... I bough
the Meistersatz ones for around $12 bucks each and they suck! They creak
and do not function as well as the originals, I find them very stiff!

Get the Stabilus-Boge.

Can't you get replacement struts for cheap?

I've replaced hood struts and it didn't cost much- have you checked your
local import parts dealer? I'll bet VM Autohaus has something
reasonable, they're in BC somewhere.
