[s-cars] argh...first the brake servo, now the rack...

Peter;

I've attached the servo test post Doug referred to.

As for the rack movement, the inner fender mounts for the steering rack on
the UrS cars are prone to fatigue fractures. Take a very good look at the
mounting points. If they are fractured, it is dangerous to drive the car.
You'll have to get a reinforcing plate made up to repair the mounts. I'll
send some photos to your personal e-mail showing typical fractures and a
reinforcing plate design. The '97 S6 came with factory reinforcing on the
rack mounts.

Folks:

need the list wisdom advice on three issues...

    * Brake assist issue which I believe to be the brake servo...- I
replaced the bomb with a recharged unit and drained and replaced most of
the fluid...After the R&R of the bomb, the brake light finally went off
after a few minutes....but the hard brake pedal after startup did not go
away, and soon the brake light was on again, constantly now. I checked
all the connections at the bomb ( line to brake servo, high pressure J
hose, return line to the hydraulic reservoir) and see no leakage. At this
point, at idle, there is little brake assist, and if I rev the engine for a
few minutes, I'll get more assist, but after three-5 hard pushes on the
brake pedal, I get some feedback like pulsing, then eventually the brake
pedal gets very hard to push....
    * I'm thinking servo, but how does one test the pump, and what led the
servo to go bad AFTER I replaced the bomb? Did some crap get dislodged?
    * Also observed that rack and servo return line to the pump reservoir (
hard T shaped line) on the driver's side rail behind the ABS pump looks
pretty rusty, will likely have to replace. any BTDTs?
    * Now for the fun part...steering rack clunks hard when turning -
observed the rack move 1/8 inch on the driver's side against the inner
fender well - the well looks intact, have to check the other side, but it
at the very least needs some re enforcement...any BTDTs?

thanks..

Happy monday....NOT
