In regards to renting cars in Europe, I've used auto europe in the past with
good success: www.autoeurope.com

I like how many options you have in regard to vehicles available. My
favorites tend to be cars in the "sport wagon" category. But I've rented the
cheapest of cheap 2 door hatchbacks (VW Polo, etc) via the site, too.

The company is a broker, you rent directly from them, they do the deal with
the larger companies (avis, etc). When you pick up the vehicle, you're
picking it up from a recognized company, but for a cost that can be
substantially less.

Just remember to print out and present all the paperwork they email you at
the rental desk to avoid confusion.
