[s-cars] How much rust should one expect to appear on a stainless steel exhaust?

Hopefully some last words on this topic....

I did the magnet check on both my old stock system and the Stromung. Here
are the magnetic findings:

                           Stock Stromung

Downpipe Non-mag Mag

Wastegate pipe Non-mag Non-mag

Connecting pipe Non-mag N/A

Cats Mag Mag

Connecting pipe Mag Mag

Resonator Mag Mag

Connecting pipe Mag Mag

Muffler & tip Non-mag Non-mag

The interesting finding is that Stromung uses different materials for the
main downpipe from the turbo and the wastegate downpipe. Based upon the
heat tint already noted, the wastegate pipe is a Nickel containing alloy
(304)

So both Audi and Stromung are using different materials for different
purposes in their exhaust systems. BTW, not all “stainless steels” are
non-magnetic. Only those alloys which are austenitic (i.e., contain higher
% of Nickel like 304) are non-magnetic. The Chromium-only stainless steels
(409 and 439) are ferritic and therefore magnetic.
