One thing was missed in the opening post here. You said there was three 
categories, but there's a fourth. Those of us, myself included, that fully 
see the problem and would LOVE to take part in a solution but just can't 
afford to. I live 21 miles from work and 8 miles outside of city limits of 
the nearest city simply because this is the only place I could afford to get 
into. Move closer to town and the price of living increases substantially, 
and this effect is even more exagerated near larger cities compared to 
little old Winston-Salem NC.

Even with my 20 mile commute an old primative electric car would be perfect. 
90% of my driving is just 40-45 miles total per day, which electrics are 
certainly good for. I'd drive one in a heartbeat, but theres just simply no 
way I could dish out the money to buy nor to build my own. I've seen an 
electric 914 on the web (very cool), and I can easily aquire a 914 shell to 
convert, but the cost of batteries alone just kills the idea.
