Lee: Now that makes sense. I am going to try to get a switchblade
remote and key (Dealer only on the key) for my 98 Avant.
Recently, I did an experiment to prove to myself that the "myth" of
extending the range of these RF remotes by holding the remote to your
head (touching your head, or under your chin) increases the range. I
did this in a parking garage, in stages, and found that with the head
(chin in my case) touching trick, the range went from about 10 ft to
about 50 ft.
Could be due to a misspent youth, penny candy and several large amalgam
fillings acting as amplifers.
YMMV

Dave,
I should rephrase my earlier statement. My son's '97 A6 came with
a newer style key fob, not the switchblade key. He then purchased
a switchblade key and programmed it to work with his car following
the instructions in the owner's manual (key in ignition, key in
door lock, etc).
My point was that the '97 and later systems are compatible with
the switchblade key, unlike any of the earlier cars.
I should also mention that his range is quite short, say no more
than 10 feet.
