I remember I got my first set of 3011 from 'tire rack' when the boys did
small engine repair and tire/wheel sales out of a dingy garage in South Bend.
That was the first real 'performance' tire, and at 205/60 on 13 x 7 ATS
wheels, that was the cats meow equivelent of 18's today! Trivia: P-S 3011 tire
molds were later sold and rebadged the Semperit High Speed Radial.

S version Sciroccos were equipped with awesome recaro seats from the
factory. Neuspeed is about the only supplier still around (they had the trick
triangulated rear stressbar for the A1, and those awesome eurethane steering rack
bushings, and the dual big bore tbody), Autotech had the trick lower subframe
bars, GMP was the sole importer of Zender products), and the dual downpipe
Gillet exhaust was hot, Cibie 195 fogs fit the factory spoiler, and Cibie also
had the flat rally 5 1/4 round inner highs for phenom lighting (with the Z
beam outers). Jetta diesel 5spd was the close ratio cheater box, Quaife made
a limited slip diff (torsen?), the 16v GTI brakes bolted onto the A1 chassis.
Setrab made a oil cooler kit, Neuspeed made a bolt on -10AN oil
cooler/filter boss (still have mine). After restoring 2 x 81 S cars, I always pined
after a Vr6 project, but a good S body is tough to find these days. BTW Chad,
the 78 without air weighed in at 1888lbs from the factory. With full cage and
interior my rally car tipped at 2040lbs.

The A1 scirocco was designed by Guigiaro at Ital Design, the A2> designs
came back to VW in-house. I bought my 78 from my ProRally codriver when he
bought a 81s. At 6'6 he folded up into those recaros just fine. I remember
getting Tire Rack's first set of 'euro snow', the Vredestein which I ran on the
rally car, and the grip was awesome. So well, that at Sno Drift PR in 82 I
remember getting a visit from the BFG guys asking about them.

Craig, thanks for the invite, though I'm sure my post count is still high on
this list in the archives (doh). I'm a lurker these days, but the Scirocco
S thread piqued my interest for sure.
