Well, actually the reason was the proximity of empty Utah desert to the
mountains of Colorado. The best thing about both my VW vans was when they
were parked. Base camp, baby, base camp. Nuthin better when parked in the
middle of nowhere south of Moab and full of real beer imported from Colorado
with a week of time to do nothing but hike and cook yerself in the hot Utah
sun.

Regardless, I owe both those air-cooled beasts a big thank you for teaching
me that I could actually work on cars, and fix them when they were broken.
Very simple machines indeed.

Great memories of those times, too. No wife, no real job, aahhhh yes, the
joys of youth (as Paul will no doubt attest).
