[s-cars] 1st Gear Whine

It's more of an annoyance than a serious problem. The 1st gear whine is
somewhat common on the earlier transmissions with the narrow 1st gear
(pre '95.5). Kind of sounds like straight cut gears. All other gears
sound normal. It's due to some galling on the teeth of the gear. If it
doesn't bother you, I would keep on driving it. Mine started at 50k
miles and I've got 115k miles on it now. Doesn't sound any worse. You
be the judge.
Of course, if you're asking because you're looking at a potential
purchase, then definitely use it as a negotiating point ;-)
