Galled 1st gear, try a good few onces of Militec-1 in the tranny
(overfill a little), it will help reduce the noise:

Being new to these cars, and now looking for a replacement for my
recently totaled //S6, I see some reference to a 1st gear whine in these
cars.  Is that a serious problem, and how prevalent is it?
