When trunking first came out, of course different manufactures had  
different ideas about what was best and sold the local constabulary  
whatever gave the contracting officer the biggest kickback. Naturally  
the systems weren't compatible (I used the term bands as a  
simplification). Motorola was the biggest supplier but not the only.  
Scanner manufacturers found it too expensive to make handhelds for  
all the systems. It looks like with the advent of new chip  
technology, that there are several which appear to cover multiple  
types (don't hold me to this, I just took a quick look.)

I dunno, I see a lot of local police driving around with a 4 antenna  
pattern along with the rest of their regular "sticks" these days.
