[s-cars] E36 stick sedan - Lightweight

my friend's 964 RSA with 75k miles on it has a stretched head stud, which seems to be a common problem with 911 and 964. he's looking at $10k for a shop to repair it. the parts are shockingly expensive, and labor is about $5k (remove engine, remove heads, do valve job on heads). he's thinking about a quickie replacement of rod bearings and rings while the engine is out, which would raise the total cost to $12k-$13k. this isn't even a performance build. mild performance build (cams, light port/polish) would raise the tab some more. i told him to pick up a tub of vaseline at costco, because he's going to need it.

those pre-996 cars are also prone to carbon fouling. the 996s apparently don't have these problems.

unfortunately, paul, i do not own the RSA any longer. out of all the
cars i've owned, around 40, the RSA is at the very top of the list
for a re-purchase. i absolutely loved that car. i was a long time BMW
member, spent some time as a chapter president, and have owned 17
BMWs (E30 M3, E36 M3, E36 LTW, E28 M5, 2002s, etc.). have had several
porsches and now own audis - '95.5 S6 and '04 S4 avant in nogaro. i'm
also a big motorcycle fan (especially the italian marques - ducati,
mv agusta, bimota...) and have several ducatis - 6 bikes in all. one
can never have enough toys, right? <g>
