Hey Doug-

Well, you'd be best served here by searching the archives on the matter
over @ AWD2 this has been kicked to death there.  And some day some day
just some day, I'll publish the "Buyer's Guide" I'd started last year -
oy.  For now... the ShortShort Version (do YOU?  do YOU?):

- leaksleaksLEAKS - front diff output, rear trans output, rear main, oil
cooler - nearly all GUARANTEED
- WP / tstat failures ~ 50k
- tbelts needed @ 105k - $$$ like $2bills
- control arms - ongoing, many of them, no biggie
- blower motors squeak ~ 100k
- leave trans's alone - <'99 A8s had the issues, tho "some" '00+ A's &
S's have lost reverse
- EVAP related CEL's - I'm ignoring mine
- headrests fail - big whoop easy fix
- lumbar bladders - some go some don't (Mark has gone LIMP, ya see)

Otherwise they're pretty bullet proof.

Biggest challenge with these is "ownership".  Many are neglected and /
or shoddily repaired.  Front bumpers are almost guaranteed to have had
"something" happen to them (wide long car, lots of blindspots, REAL low
long overhang).

Best bet is to have SuperBruce hook you up with an extended warranty,
and laugh all the way to your wrench.  4yr / unlimited miles here
muwhahahaa.

That should get you started.  They are an ASTOUNDING amount of car for
the doughage IMnotsoHO.  Each day's been giddier than the next in mine,
1.5yrs and 30k into mine, now @ 119k.
